Description

1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS SS Z11 Pace Car

Introduced in 1967, the Camaro was an instant success story, one that continues to this day. The current version of the Camaro takes many of its styling cues from that Gen 1 car. The Camaro was named as the official Pace Car for the 1969 Indianapolis 500. Chevrolet designed a beautiful White/Orange Camaro RS/SS convertible to meet the challenge. They then produced a limited number (said to be 3,675) of the 'Indy 500 Pace Car' models for sale to the public. These cars used stock Camaro performance drivetrain components, but had unique styling options. This fully restored '69 Camaro RS/SS convertible is one of these original tribute 'Indy 500 Pace Cars'. The data plate on the firewall has all of the correct codes unique to the factory 'Indy Sport Accents' package (code Z11). Mileage on the odometer (75,200) is believed to be actual. The rotisserie restoration was completed in 2009 and it is truly exceptional. An extensive binder of photos and documentation is included along with Delivery documents and Owners Manual. There is even an official '1969 Indianapolis 500 Event Program'.

The body/floor panels (all original) were carefully prepped and all gaps are outstanding. The body was professionally finished in the Indy Pace Car colors of Dover White (code 50A) with Orange hood, deck (Z28 style) and fender trim (code 720). There is a ZL2 functional cowl induction hood and a subtle rear spoiler. All Pace Cars were factory optioned with the Rally Sport/Super Sport accent packages that added hide-away headlights, simulated rear fender louvers and taillight trim. (It is worth noting that the hide-away headlights on this Camaro use with the originally designed vacuum system, not aftermarket electric motors.) This convertible does not have the 'Indy 500' decals on the doors, a dealer installed option that many folks deleted. It sits beautifully on original 14” GM/Kelsey Rally wheels with Firestone Indy 500 radial tires. A fully restored interior looks better than new – it is stunning. This interior (code 720) was available only in the Indy 500 Pace Car version and spotlighted orange 'houndstooth' upholstery and door panels. Other features include an S/S wheel, tinted windows, manual white convertible top and original, working AM radio. Horsepower is furnished by what is said to be the matching numbers 350ci/300hp small-block that has not been rebuilt and appears to be as factory. It is equipped with a date-coded, non-original Quadrajet 4V carburetor. (This is a rare Quadrajet as it was manufactured by Carter, not Rochester.) Torque is delivered by a 3-speed Turbo Hydra-matic transmission to a 12-bolt non-positraction differential w/3.07:1 gears (code BL). The owner believes these too are also original components. The spotless chassis is equipped with power steering and power disc/drum brakes w/dual master. This Camaro is Bowtie history that will only become more valuable over time. You will not go wrong with this distinctive 'Indy 500 Pace Car' as an investment and special driving experience.
